Week 28

By Shelby

We had another great week catching up with my family, so we didn’t do much traveling. Monday, we stayed in Canandaigua, a city on Canandaigua Lake. The night before, we had caught a nice sunset at a park right on the lake. And then an amazing sunrise the next morning outside of Planet Fitness.

Both Monday and Tuesday, we worked from the local library in Canandaigua. The downtown of the city was surprisingly very cute. Main street was lined with small local shops. It was a little cold for me to want to explore much, though. Despite Monday being Halloween, we didn’t do anything specific to celebrate. We just relaxed at the park on the lake, which was nice.

Tuesday after work, we drove to Victor, back toward Rochester. We planned on going to trivia night at the New York Beer Project, one of our favorite restaurants in the area. We had some time to kill before trivia started, so we walked around Eastview Mall.

We did better than I thought we would at trivia. A lot of the questions were about pop culture, which is not our strong point. Spencer tried a beer flight and I had a mojito. My favorite part of the meal was the pretzel with dipping sauces. I like to get that every time we go. After dinner and trivia, we drove to the Planet Fitness in Henrietta to sleep.

Wednesday, Spencer went into his office to work for the day. I took the car and washed and vacuumed it at a car wash. I was worried about taking it through the automatic car wash with the rain guards again, but they made it through fine. I also took care of a few other errands. After I picked up Spencer at work, we drove up to the Woodcliff Hotel to watch the sunset while we ate dinner. The hotel is on top of a hill and has a great view.

Thursday, we had a quick breakfast before driving to RIT, our alma mater, to walk around for the day. We explored our old buildings and checked out the new building being built. For lunch, we had “mascots”, a panini with breaded chicken in a special RIT sauce. When we finished seeing everything we wanted to see, we grabbed our laptops and played Minecraft for a few hours.

For dinner, we got Salsarita’s, Spencer’s favorite on-campus restaurant. I got a burrito bowl and Spencer got a quesadilla and chips and cheese to share. Before leaving RIT, we made sure to get a few pictures with the RIT sign.

Our next stop was the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester. We met up with my Mom and Grandma to see the musical Hamilton, which is one of my favorites. I thought it was really good. After it finished around 11PM, we drove back to Planet Fitness in Henrietta to sleep.

Friday morning, we drove to Geneva for my sister’s wedding. We had some time before the rehearsal dinner, so we went to Seneca Lake State Park to walk along the water. The weather was warmer than it had been, but very windy. With the wind, it was pretty chilly. Before going to our Airbnb, we had a quick lunch by the lake. We did a load of laundry while getting ready for dinner. After the rehearsal dinner, we went right to bed since we had a long day Saturday.

I met my sister bright and early Saturday morning to get ready for the wedding. While I was getting ready, Spencer made lasagna and quiche back at the Airbnb. It was a good opportunity to use an oven. We will hopefully have enough leftovers to last us a week. Next week we plan on doing a lot of driving as we head south.

The wedding went well. It was nice to see all the people there for my sister and her husband. The location was also beautiful. It was a castle next to the lake. We got some very nice photos of everyone all dressed up.

Sunday morning, Spencer made blueberry muffins for breakfast, along with sausage patties. They were very good. We also did another load of laundry and got all of our stuff together before leaving the Airbnb. We had thought about going hiking at Letchworth State Park today, but it was far. We decided to go to Watkins Glen instead. Watkins Glen was much closer than Letchworth. We hiked the 3 mile round trip gorge trail. It was surprisingly busy for November. The weather was beautiful. It was sunny and the temperature was in the mid-70s.

After we finished our hike, we headed back to Rochester to put some more things back in our storage unit. Then we went to a park in Fairport to relax for the rest of the night. We’re planning on leaving New York Monday morning and going straight down to Philadelphia, which we had skipped when we were in Pennsylvania before. Spencer took off work next week, so we can cover more ground before the weather gets too cold. If all goes well, we will be in Myrtle Beach for Thanksgiving. It’s been nice being back in New York and seeing our families, but we’re ready to get back on the road!

Fun Facts from Week 28:

  • Seneca Lake is used by the U.S. Navy to calibrate and test sonar equipment.
  • Seneca Lake is also the deepest lake that is entirely within New York.
  • RIT’s mascot, the tiger, came to be when RIT purchased a rescued Bengal tiger in 1963.
