Week 27

By Shelby

This was another uneventful week for us, travel-wise. We were still in New York, so we didn’t do too much sightseeing or hiking. Monday we worked from the Dunham Public Library in Whitesboro near Utica. I still wasn’t feeling the greatest, so I worked from the car while Spencer was in the library.

Tuesday went pretty much the same. I spent most of the day working from the car until the afternoon when I went into the library. The library was surprisingly very loud. There was a book club that had taken over one of the tables and they were very lively. Because of the loudness, we decided to work from the Jervis Public Library in Rome Wednesday. This was also in the right direction toward Rochester, so it made more sense to go to this library instead.

After work Wednesday, we drove to Verona Beach where we had an Airbnb with Spencer’s parents. They were coming down from Plattsburgh to visit us. It was very nice to see them. It had been a while. Wednesday night, we went to a restaurant on the lake to get dinner. We even spent a few dollars at the casino. Spencer and I both agree that we don’t really get gambling.

Thursday, we went to Verona Beach State Park just down the road. We looked at a pavilion and lodge that are potential wedding locations. The lake was pretty, but the wind was frigid. The rest of the day, we hung out at the Airbnb and relaxed.

We went out to the Pancake House in Verona for breakfast. I got a very tasty mimosa. After breakfast, we parted ways with Spencer’s parents and headed off to Rochester. Our first stop was the storage unit. On our way there, we actually saw a GoodYear blimp floating near I-90.

When we got to the storage unit, we gathered up the items that we wanted to store. We had a few kitchen items we don’t really use, like our strainer and sink basin. This freed up some space in the car. Everything in the storage unit looked fine. We were slightly worried that animals may have gotten in or something. But it all seemed good. Our next stop was Eastview Mall where we looked at and purchased wedding bands. We chose a local jewelry shop, which I was happy about. They seemed to be half the price of a nationwide chain we went to first. After that, Spencer got a haircut since his hair was getting a little long. After that, we went to my parents’ house for the night. We started watching Hamilton since my parents hadn’t seen it yet.

Saturday, my mom and I met up with my grandma to try on wedding dresses. Fortunately, I was able to find one I loved and was also within budget. It should be ready by the time we get back to Rochester in the spring. It’s a little difficult planning a wedding while traveling full-time. After that, we went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch, which was delicious. Later on, we all carved pumpkins. Spencer’s was very intricate compared to mine. But they were all very good!

Sunday, we got a lot of things checked off our to-do list. We did laundry, had lunch with my grandparents at my parents’ house, cleaned our water bottles, topped off the coolant in the Prius, and more. In the afternoon, we moved on to Canandaigua where we plan on staying for the next couple of days. It was very good to see everyone!

Fun Facts from Week 27:

  • Holley, NY has the only original part of the Erie Canal west of Rochester.
  • The Erie Canal is one of 55 National Heritage Areas across the U.S.
