This was our last week on the road. It feels pretty crazy that we’re done. We spent the beginning of the week working from a public library in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I spent the days getting things set up with the apartment and my new job. The weather in Pennsylvania definitely felt colder than it had been in North Carolina and Virginia. It felt more like Spring in the northeast.
After work Monday, we went to Friendly’s for dinner. Spencer and I both thought they had closed all their locations, but apparently there are a lot left. Spencer was very excited to get their ice cream. We did laundry after work Tuesday. If all goes well, this was our last time doing laundry at a laundromat for the foreseeable future. We’re pretty excited about that.
Thursday, we drove from Harrisburg to Rochester, a four and a half hour drive. We got the Prius an oil change before driving to a park to hang out for a few hours. When it started getting dark, we drove to our home Planet Fitness. That was our last night spent in the car. In the morning, we canceled our Planet Fitness memberships and drove to our new apartment. By mere chance, we moved in exactly one year to the date since moving out of our old apartment.
Our first task was to break down the bed platform and take everything out of the car and bring it into the apartment. It went by pretty quick. Then Spencer made a few trips to our storage unit and brought things back while I organized the apartment. Unfortunately, the storage unit was a lot dirtier than we had expected. There were dead and live bugs, along with mouse poop. If we were to get a storage unit again, we would get one inside. Friday night we went grocery shopping and got a bunch of bagels to start having for breakfast.
Saturday went much the same. Spencer made more trips to the storage unit while I organized things. The weather could have been better. It was rainy most of the day. We made a lot of progress and were able to get all of the things we would need right away. We plan on renting a moving truck to get the rest. In the evening, we visited my family. It was great to see everyone and catch up.
Sunday, we took my car to get an inspection and oil change. Then we spent most of the day organizing things and moving boxes. We took a break to work on the website and write our last blog post. It’s been a great adventure this past year, but we’re ready to take a break from moving non-stop. We have a lot planned for this summer: our wedding, spending time with family, and hopefully buying a house. Thank you all for following along our journey! We have a page with some end-of-trip frequently asked questions about our adventure.
Fun Facts from Week 53:
- There are 119 Friendly’s left in the US. At one point there were over 800.
- We went to 124 different Planet Fitnesses and 67 libraries across the country.
- In total, we visited 42 out of the 63 US National Parks.
